New requirements from January 1, 2026
Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on the State Language will enter into force on January 1, 2026.
Persons who directly serve customers, are obliged to provide services to the public in the Lithuanian language not below basic level A1.
- For foreigners, knowledge of the Lithuanian language is required at the level A1 will be valid for the first two years.
- After this period, in order to continue working in the service or trade sector, it will be necessary to confirm knowledge of the state language at the level A2.
Who should take the exam?
The exam is necessary if you:
- work or plan to work in the service or trade sector;
- communicate directly with customers;
- you are applying for a permanent residence permit or long-term EU resident status.
Who organizes the exam?
Basic exams in the state language I category (A1–A2 level) organizes
National Education Agency.
