Celebrating winter Užgavenes (Masnitsa, Maslenitsa)

Uzhhavenes ("healing") is a pagan holiday in origin. However, it is associated with the Catholic Easter and is celebrated by Catholics 7 weeks before the Bright Resurrection of Christ.
This fun celebration has many features that make it akin to the Slavic Masnitsa. The meaning of the holiday is the same – to chase away the harsh winter and call for spring. "Ziema, ziema, eik iš kiemo!" ("Winter, winter, get out of the yard!") Lithuanians shout.
